Frequently Asked Questions
How do tryouts work? Tryouts for the Winter Competition Season are in May and are held at Centennial High School. After this set of tryouts, your dancer will know if they have made one of our teams. Then, in October, we have a secondary tryout to determine team placement. We currently have Varsity Jazz, Varsity Kick, JV Jazz, JV Kick and B Squad Jazz teams. Each dancer will be placed on both a jazz and a kick team.
Who is eligible to tryout for the winter dance team season? Any dancer, including girls and boys, currently in grades 6-11 can tryout.
When is the Winter Competition Season? The winter competition season runs from October - February.
How do I register my dancer for the Winter Competition Season? Registration is on Campus Portal. Please register your dancer for the Winter Competition Season by the registration deadline, which can be found on the Centennial High School website. All dancers must be fully registered before they are placed on a team. We will begin learning our dances and preparing for our first competition on the first day of practice and dancers cannot participate until they are registered and paid in full. The dance fee will be posted before registration begins for the season.
What is the cost of registration? 2024-2025 = $360. There are other costs associated with being on the dance team such as jazz/kick shoes, tights, make-up, and warm up outfits, etc.
What do practices look like? Practices may be before and/or after school depending on what team the dancer makes. Typically the after school practices are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Centennial Middle School and Blue Heron Elementary School from 3:30-6:15pm. High school students can either drive/get a ride to the middle or can take the bus from the high school to the middle school. Morning practices are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at the high school and typically run from 6-7:30am. Middle school students can take the buses that drop off the high schoolers in the morning to get to the middle school in time to start their school day. Practices are a combination of dance practice and conditioning/strength training.
What do dancers wear to practices: Dancers must wear black clothing Monday-Thursday and may wear any color on Friday. Dancers must have at least one pair of jazz shoes and tennis shoes at each practice. Hair must be pulled back in a bun and no jewelry is allowed.
Do dancers have to attend all practices? Yes, dancers are required to attend all practices and must reach out to the coaching staff to get prior approval if they must miss a practice. In addition, the dance team attendance form must be filled out prior to the missed practice.
How do we stay connected during the season? We use the GroupMe app to stay connected during the season. The parents and dancers have separate groups so each of you will need to sign up.
